Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s first Type 075 amphibious assault ship departed Shanghai on August 5 to begin her initial sea trials.

The 35,000-ton landing helicopter dock (LHD) vessel waslaunchedat Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HDZH)’s facility in Shanghai on September 25 last year. Since then, she was undergoing equipment outfitting while pierside at the shipyard. The vesselsuffered a minor firein April this year.

The Type 075 helicopter dock is a new generation of amphibious assault vessels and far larger than similar ships previously constructed for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy like the 25,000-ton Type 071 amphibious transport dock (LPD) ships.

The vessel has a full-length flight deck for helicopter operations and features a floodable well deck from which to disembark hovercraft and armored amphibious assault vehicles

The Type 075 would give the Chinese Navy the ability to deploy helicopters, landing craft, and troops to attack enemy naval vessels, ground forces, or submarines. The vessels will also be capable of conducting command and control operations.

The second vessel of the class waslaunchedon April 22, 2020.
